Palm Springs is better

Generally speaking when I am going to plan a vacation, I like to pick a place where I can eat good food, drink good drinks, be active ( in some capacity) and maybe throw in some time by the fire or on a hammock!

Palm Springs is a place that I had not been to since becoming an adult and as a Northern California dweller it takes a bit more to get there than from LA or SD. So when one of my Best Friends suggested we take a trip there for her birthday I very enthusiastically said , “YES”!

palmspringsimg_8685

There was one caveat though… we were going in SUMMER! You might be thinking who in their right mind goes to the desert in the summer? Well people who love a good deal, and in the summer, Palm Springs has amazing lodging deals.

We took off from foggy San Francisco in the morning and landed in Palm Springs at potentially the hottest part of the day… walking off the plane was a rude awakening to say the least.

palmspringsimg_8704

We assumed (wrongly) that we would be able to get a rental car since its summer… no one is in the desert right? Well without a rental car to our names we would have to uber/lyft/taxi/shuttle all around town.. which turned out to be a good option. The shuttle is great! Highly reccomend looking into it when you are there as a form of transportation.

We stayed at the Saguaro. If you aren’t living under a rock you have already seen its brightly colored, palm tree laden grounds all over instagram.

I would reccomend staying at this hotel if you LOVE to party all day and into the night… the pool parties are very popular here but also extremely annoying if that isn’t your steeze.

If I were to go back I would potentially stay at the Parker or The Ace

Once settled at our hotel we took a car service to Elvis’s Honeymoon Hideaway . We had booked a tour prior to arriving which I reccomend if you are interested. I haven’t made it to Graceland yet, so being somewhere that The King lived was a magical experience. It is hard to believe that this home is owned by a couple ( who are selling btw). To me, it seems like this house should be a museum. It is amazing though how little has been updated. The home maintains its original charm and finishes.

After our tour we were famished and in need of a bite to eat! Another note about Summer is that places close in the middle of the day/ or for the season so be prepared to not get to try all the places you have dreamed about on yelp/instagram.palmspringsimg_8783

Indian Summer : Six Pack

With the temperatures here in California hotter than hot we are experiencing a full blown Indian Summer!

Because of this I figured there is still time to list out my favorite summer 6 pack.

Hopefully this weekend you can get out for an adventure and finish it with a cold brew.

Without further ado here is my Indian Summer Six Pack.

These beers are light and refreshing.  Enough to satisfy you but not so heavy that you can’t enjoy it when the temps are 90+.

screen-shot-2016-09-27-at-1-55-48-pmAnchor Brewing Company’s Mango Wheat has a distinct mango flavor thats natural and subtle. I easily put away five of these since it is such an easy drinking beer and at 4.5% you won’t be worse for the wear.

screen-shot-2016-09-27-at-1-56-40-pm

21st Amendment Brewery | Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Beer has been a favorite of mine for many years. I have taken this beer on many floating and camping trips. I particularly enjoy it with a little slice of watermelon. It is a 4.9% beer so you can drink a few and it won’t take you out.

screen-shot-2016-09-27-at-1-59-57-pm

Something you won’t be able to pick up at home but worth a trip to Eastern Washington to drink up is the Colchuck Raspberry Wheat from Icicle Brewing Company. This raspberry wheat beer is a welcome adventure for your tastebuds to explore. Fruity but not fake or over the top, it is truly a unique delight.

screen-shot-2016-09-27-at-1-57-53-pmCali Creamin’ Vanilla Cream Ale from Mother Earth Brewery is best enjoyed on Nitro but a bottle or can will do for summer adventures. I had this beer a few years ago and then didn’t see it for awhile and now you can get it everywhere. I do highly reccomend going to Mother Earth Brewery in Vista, Ca… well worth the trip out there. The smell of this beer is all vanilla but for me the taste is not too sweet. I think they have done a good job of the just right balance between bitter and sweet.

screen-shot-2016-09-27-at-2-00-17-pmAnother one you will have to drive for! Milk & Honey from Standing Stone Brewery in Ashland, Oregon is a delight for the palate. The title explains it but this ale features lactose, milk sugar and honey malt. Beautiful amber pour and mildly sweet mouthful. Great for a hot night, maybe even a taco Tuesday!

screen-shot-2016-09-27-at-1-57-28-pm

Last but certainly not least, is the heaviest beer in my Indian Summer six pack, at 8.2% is the Love Child No. 7 from Boulevard Brewery. It isn’t the lightest beer but it has a delicious sour flavor that makes it ideal for warm summer nights. A great wild ale to sip slowly and really enjoy with friends.

I am excited for the cooler temperatures and all that the Fall brings but for now I will enjoy these warm days and nights and savor all my light summer beers!

Let me know if you have any recommendations for me to add to my pack this weekend!

A Wedding Weekend in New Awlins

A few weeks ago I had the immense pleasure of going to New Orleans to be a part of my best friends wedding!

This was my first trip to New Orleans and it won’t be my last…might be last time in August…the humidity is real.

We stayed at the Hotel Provincial which had a great location for heading out to the French Quarter. Friendly staff, quaint courtyard and one of the most haunted places. I fortunately did not encounter any ghosts while we were there. The bar on site was really fun and had one of the best Bloody Mary’s I have ever had.

img_9404img_9406

One of my favorite things about New Orleans is the beautiful buildings and plants.img_9407img_9408

My friends wedding took place at Muriel’s, right here on the Balcony outside. The day of the wedding was perfect. By far my favorite part of the day was the Second Line Parade. I loved the experience of celebrating their commitment with a parade around Jackson Square and down Bourbon Street. img_9409

No trip to NOLA would be a trip without hitting Cafe Du Monde. We came here daily and I miss their strong chicory coffee and sweet sweet beignets.img_9410img_9411img_9414img_9416img_9417img_9418

Jax Brewhouse is a fun place to stop and grab some go cups for the road. img_9420img_9422img_9423img_9426

Bourbon Street was pretty quite at this time of day/year and I can’t imagine being here on Mardi Gras or Halloween! img_9427

A must visit is the Carousel Bar & Lounge – fun experience and great cocktails.img_9428img_9436img_9438img_9439img_9440

We went to Domenica for their Rehearsal Lunch and the food was really amazing – fresh local flavors were paired with delicious wines.img_9442img_9444img_9445img_9446img_9449img_9451img_9454img_9457img_9459img_9460

Not photographed was our time spent on Frenchmen Street, I had so much fun dancing on the street to amazing musicians. It was such a cool experience to hear such great music at every corner. The Frenchmen Art Market is a must hit – unique, one of a kinda art, photos and craft.

I absolutely loved New Orleans and would love to go back and explore more.

Santa Breezy

A little over 24 hours in Santa Barbara and you are left wanting more, trying to find a way to get back to this little slice of coastal heaven. I am no stranger to Santa Barbara as I grew up about two hours North but this was my first rendezvous as a post 21 year old…shameful I know! On this particular weekend the weather was perfect and I had the most amazing guide who showed me the best time, thanks Baby Krause!

We began the day with breakfast downtown and then headed to Montecito for a little hike and beach time!

We lazed on the beach for a while before renting some paddle boards. Gazing up at the coastline and foothills/mountains ( prob foothills – I don’t think they have mountains ) was truly breathtaking and I thought to myself ‘What a lucky life’ moments that are simple but beautiful really make you appreciate what you have and for myself contentment with the life I have created for myself.

img_9335

No trip would be complete with out a little brewery hopping and while SB has a ways to go before they are a beer destination ( def more options for winos) I enjoyed sampling what they had to offer while working on my sun burn ( sorry future self! ).

Pure Order is a fun spot with games as well as live music and a food truck on a Saturday afternoon. img_9337img_9338

After we spent some time at Pure Order we walked to the Funk Zone and tried Brass Bear. I tried their beers as well as one rotating tap that was really delicious.img_9342

At this point it was high time for some grub so we ordered a meat and cheese plate it was satisfying and helped us make it to dinner time! img_9346

Right across from Brass Bear is Municipal Winemakers tasting Room. Fun decor and great outdoor space. I hear their Rose is amazing but on this fine day it was sold out so we opted for the Bright White – cool, crisp and so refreshing!img_9348img_9349img_9350img_9354

If you haven’t been to Lilly’s Taqueria head there – now – or at the very least make an effort to hit it when you are in Santa Barbara. I am pretty sure all they do is Tacos and they do them really well. img_9392img_9358

No weekend in Santa Barbara would be complete with some wheel action. They have fun little beach boardwalk where you can blade which is my favorite pastime and something I don’t get to do enough since I am living in Oakland… not too many blading trails… img_9363

Finally, to close the weekend we hit up a hybrid bar coffee shop and got the most delish cold brew. Melissa had the smartest idea of doing half/half sweetened cold brew and unsweetened cold brew. Such a genius idea!img_9365img_9366img_9367img_9369

SO sad to leave and can’t wait to go back!

I always have a craving for something sweet after a meal. Lately, since I am trying to be healthy I will attempt to have tea but if that won’t do it here is a fun little one cup cookies recipe.

Do you take a lunch to work or make one at home? I love this little video of weekday lunch ideas.

Artichokes and I go way back, I have loved them for a long time. This crispy roasted artichoke recipe brings new life to an old favorite.

I could have hummus everyday and its Mother approved because its so dang good for you. These hummus recipes are steadily going to make it into my Summer rotation.

We went a little ham at the farmers market this weekend! That being said I have made a couple yummy recipes using asparagus. Have a craving for fries but want to be a little healthier, whip up these Asparagus Fries! Okay, so they aren’t really super fry like but I think you can use your imagination. Next, I made this delicious frittata with Asparagus, Kale and Peppers, 10/10 would make again.

There is an app for just about everything these days, but I recently heard about Truebill  which sounds like a dream come true for those of us who can be a little bit lazy checking every recurring charge. Haven’t tried it yet, because like I mentioned I am a bit laaazy but it sounds really awesome!

If you have read my blog for any length of time you have probably come to the realization that I enjoy beer, I would say its probably one of my favorite pastimes, reading about it, drinking it etc… so when a friend sent me this article last week with six reasons why you should date a guy who drinks beer I was laughing hysterically. Amen.

I went to Capitola last Fall and really loved it! This is a cute locals guide to the city. I hit a few things but missed some others, Oh well I guess I will have to go back!
